Purse

Gelatine-based bioplastic, thread

Purse is a prototype in the exploration of manufactured exclusivity and its environmental impacts using bioplastic as a vehicle. Brands, like Baggu and Owala, are notably focused on promoting and encouraging sustainability with reusable products. However, the creation of limited education “drops” of the same products but in new prints and colorways turns these into highly coveted novelties or collectibles. This, in turn, results in overconsumption and hyperconsumerism with the audiences owning an egregious number of multiples. In addition, resellers buy out stock and relist them for upwards of three times the original price.

I am interested in the idea of multiples and the various connotations they can invoke depending on organization. What is it that sets apart abundance from excess? What separates a collection from a hoard? How do we discern admiration from obsession?
