For the past six years, I have been in a state of stagnation. I have been constantly on the verge of something great, but never quite managing to break through. Stagnation can be isolating. Being an artist has been the catalyst for so much personal growth. As a direct result, I now find myself on the precipice of the most life-altering changes as I continue to pursue art. But as I stand here, about to receive all the things I have been praying for, I question if Iām ready. The stillness is as comforting as it is suffocating.
A butterfly goes through four separate stages of metamorphosis in the span of one life cycle. Do you think they ever feel scared of what is to come - if they wish they could just stay the way they are? Or perhaps they sit in that chrysalis itching for release. Regardless, change happens whether or not we are ready to receive it. Growth cannot happen without change, and change is the unavoidable ramification of growth.
Change was one of nine sculptures in a group installation titled "ART & FEAR: Materialization, Confrontation, and Liberation".
At the beginning of the semester, we read excerpts from the novel Art & Fear: Observations on the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking. As we progress and advance as artists, fear and fear regarding art making becomes increasingly prevalent. However, there is no way around fear - it is inevitable. The only way to get over it is to go through it.
This exhibition seeks to convey the fear we face as artists yet remind us of the control we have over it. It is into three parts: materialization, confrontation, and liberation. In the first part, the fear materializes. In the second part, the fear is confronted. In the third part, we are set free from the fear.
